Students concentrate on working in their medium of choice. Using traditional academic methods, students are taught fundamental drawing skills and practice them in each class by rendering drawings, used as "blueprints" to complete a piece of art in one of the following mediums:
Acrylic/Oil on Canvas: Using the classical academic approach we start the painting with an "under painting" that sets the values or mood of the painting. Continuing from there we use a series of layers and glazes to produce a painting with depth.
Watercolor: Controlling the watercolor isn't as important as letting the watercolor lead. Lightest colors are generally applied first.
Pastel: Layering the pastel starting with a toned sanded paper, leads to most intriguing moods. As with any good painting, we start with an under painting, identifying the darkest shadows and warmest highlights, and move through the painting finishing with details.
Colored Pencil: Is it pencil or a painting? It's both. A painting that is produced with a colored pencil. Starting with the lightest values first, you continually work toward the darker values, laying multiple hues (colors) one over the next to produce a rich painting.
Classes are held in 4 week sessions and are on-going. Contact instructor for start dates.

Each day will offer a different fine art experience working in different mediums. The most fundamental part of any painting is a good drawing so we will focus on understanding what makes a good composition. Each project will consist of a drawing, then using the drawing, students will render a painting.Exploring the different techniques using in watercolor, pastel & acrylic, students will gain the confidence to create a solid piece of artwork from the beginning.

STUDIO & PLEIN AIR WORKSHOP IN OIL & ACRYLIC Location: Purity Spring Resort Workshop
Dates: 10/2/2008 - 10/5/2008 Contact Person: Elaine Farmer
A national award winning artist and over 18 years of fine art teaching experience to students of all levels and talents, Farmer is as comfortable in the class room as she is en plein air. She holds the Hudson River Valley Artists in high regard for their valuable studies en plein air along with their classical academic approach to painting and strives to remain faithful to this process when teaching and creating her own art.
Color Theory is the central focus for this workshop. Time is limited when painting en plein air so it is important to understand the basics of color mixing. Knowledge of pigments used for accurate color mixing will eliminate the frustration of endless remixing. This technique creates a more harmonious painting, simplifies the use for greens in a landscape and it teaches the benefits of using complimentary colors to create neutrals or grays. Color control can be achieved once the distinctions between the contributing colors are acknowledged. Students will receive plenty of personalized instruction while gaining the concept of this simplified color palette.
You’ll be enlightened by the use of a controlled palette no matter the medium used. At a quiet lake shore you’ll practice the use of the controlled palette and from the top of a majestic mountain view you will learn the fundamentals of aerial perspective. Autumn in New Hampshire the colors are spectacular which makes it the best time to add some vibrant color to those green landscapes.
Join us as Mother Nature provides us with plenty of inspiration for this ultimate painting workshop in the Mountains of New Hampshire.
